Yorkshire have secured new contracts with 10 players as they prepare for their LV= County Championship title defence next summer.

England right-hander Joe Rootheads the list of names and has been joined in committing his future to the club until 2016 by fellow title winners Adil Rashidand Andy Hodd.

The White Rose county have otherwise looked to tie down the futures of a host of young talent coming through the club.

England Under-19s trio Matthew Fisher, Josh Shaw and Karl Carver - who made his championship debut in the summer - have been handed their first professional deals while 22-year-old seamer Moin Ashraf has been handed a one-year contract.

“It is important to keep the squad together as much as we possibly can,” Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon said.

“We have had some success over the last few years, but from our point of view it is only the start and we want to be successful over a period of time.

“To get the core of the squad signed up for at least the next 12 months is very important.”

Adil Rashid featured in 14 games in Yorkshire's championship success and has signed a new two-year contract with his home county

Ashraf’s new deal comes after a frustrating couple of seasons in which he has failed to recapture the form that saw him become a key part of the Yorkshire team that reached the 2012 domestic Twenty20 final.

He is set to fly out to Australia today to play club cricket in Adelaide in readiness for the new campaign.

“It is fair to say that Moin has had a couple of disappointing years,” Moxon said.

“He has been working hard in the close season on his overall fitness and a winter in Australia will do him good. He just needs to be training and playing as much as he can.

“He hasn’t had regular cricket because of injuries and various other things. It is an important season for him and I want him challenging to be amongst our senior squad.

“He has shown in previous seasons that he can perform at the highest level and he needs to find a way of recapturing that form.”

Amongst Yorkshire’s dominance of the championship last season the performances of their young players pointed at a healthy future.

Slow left-armer Carver claimed the final wicket in their championship success at Warwickshire while seamers Fisher and Shaw impressed as England Under-19s whitewashed world champions South Africa in their youth one-day series.

Matthew Fisher made his Yorkshire bow as a 15-year-old and, after playing for England Under-19s last summer, has signed his first pro deal

“The young lads have brought energy and freshness to training so far,” Moxon said.

“They have impressed in fitness sessions and are eager to be part of our plans next season. They’ll be getting up to speed with the rigours of professional cricket and I have no doubt that they will put pressure on the rest of the squad for a spot in the first team at some stage.

“They are very talented and they will be ready when required.”

Yorkshire have also handed out a one-year contract to seamer James Wainman, after two seasons of injury, while youngsters Eliot Callis and Ryan Gibson have signed senior academy contracts until the end of 2015.

“James has had a number of injuries, which has hampered his progression over the last couple of years,” Moxon added.

“He returned to full fitness last season and bowled really well in the second team. He just needs to continue his development.

“We have high hopes for James and I don’t feel there is particular pressure on him. He just needs to get plenty of overs under his belt and keep working on his skills.”
