Mitchell Johnson has hailed the support of his family and team-mates after capping his wonderful season for Australia by being named the LG ICC cricketer of the year and the ICC Test cricketer of the year.

Johnson joins an elite list of players to have won the cricketer of the year award, including compatriot Michael Clarke and former England international Andrew Flintoff, and is only the second person to have won it twice after his former captain Ricky Ponting.

In winning the award, Johnson fought off competition from South Africa’s AB de Villiers, and Sri Lankan duo Angelo Matthews and Kumar Sangakkara.

The fast bowler previously won the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy in 2009, and this year clinched the title thanks to his 59 Test wickets and 21 ODI wickets.

Following the announcement, Johnson, who claimed best bowling figures of 7-40 against England in Adelaide last December, said: “Some of the greats of the game have been nominated and won this award, and it’s a very special honour.

“Aggressive fast bowlers are something you’d have seen back in the day with the likes of (Dennis) Lillee and (Jeff) Thomson. For me, it’s nice to be able to contribute to the team and do the job that I’ve always thought I’ve been able to do.

"I suppose it comes down to the attitude I’ve got, the belief and the confidence. I’m very happy with where I am at the moment and I want to keep getting better as a cricketer.

“This is something that I’ll be able to look back on in time when my career is over and be exceptionally proud of. I want to thank everyone for their support, especially my team-mates, support staff and my family for everything they’ve done for me. I wouldn’t be sitting here today without them.”

Johnson also joins Clarke and Ponting as the third Australian to win the Test cricketer of the year gong, with Matthews, Sangakkara and compatriot David Warner the other nominees for 2014.

Three England players took home awards, with Gary Ballance, Sarah Taylor and Katherine Brunt honoured, while umpire Richard Kettleborough was named umpire of the year.

England women's captain Charlotte Edwards was beaten to the LG People's Choice Award by India seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar, while Scotland's Preston Mommsen took home the Affiliate Cricketer of the Year award.

AB de Villiers, Aaron Finch and Meg Lanning were the other major winners at the event.
