Nick Compton has parted ways with Somerset by mutual agreement, the club confirmed today.
Compton joined Somerset in 2010 from Middlesex, and spent five years with the club.
During his time at Somerset, Compton has amassed 5,140 first-class runs at an average of nearly 56, including a career-best of 254 not out against Durham in 2011.
The news of Compton’s departure was confirmed in a statement on the Somerset website.
Compton said: “I have loved playing for Somerset, but I have decided to relocate more permanently to my base in South-West London.
“I have always set myself the highest of professional standards, and I don’t want to compromise myself or the club, going forward.
“I appreciate Somerset’s understanding of my wish to balance both my personal and professional life."
Compton, who has played in nine Tests for England including going on tour to India, started his county career with Middlesex.
Somerset director of cricket, Matt Maynard said: “I am sorry to see Nick depart as he is a quality cricketer but it is fundamentally important that he, or any player for that matter, wants to be here and is able to perform to the best of their ability; sadly this is not something Nick feels able to achieve at this time.”
