Rain rules at Headingley

By Liam Blackburn at Headingley

No play was possible between England and Australia in the first match of the NatWest Series as rain wreaked havoc at Headingley.

Not a single ball was bowled in the opening clash of five as persistent precipitation continued to fall in Leeds throughout the morning and during lunch.

After the start was delayed, conditions eased somewhat prior to the next inspection at 1pm, with umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Illingworth surveying the scene again half an hour later.

However, the inclement weather continued and, with no sign of the forecast getting any better, the match was abandoned at 1:34pm.

1:34pm - MATCH ABANDONED DUE TO RAIN - And that's the final nail in the coffin. Aleem Dar nearly lost his umbrella in these blustery conditions; he and Richard Illingworth call this game off with no play possible.

1:06pm - The umpires, huddling under umbrellas, have been and gone out in the middle and they want another look at 1:30pm. The rain had abated completely just before 1pm but it has come back with a vengeance since.

12:51pm - It's as bright as it has been all day now with only a light drizzle threatening proceedings. Joe Root had to waddle over the ground on his way to a net before but there were no puddles to greet Jonathan Trott when he made his way back in just now.

12:20pm - Whisper it very quietly but it's easing up ever so slightly out there. If nothing else the stadium and the local fans deserve some play given the one-day international here against West Indies last summer was abandoned due to similar circumstances.

11:46am - We've just received word the umpires will have another inspection at 1pm. So just over an hour for the hardy spectators inside Headingley to catch a break weather-wise.

11:34am - The umpires are currently out in the middle but I fear this is more in hope than expectation. It's well over an hour after play was due to start and there's little evidence we'll begin shortly.

11:06am -  The eternal optimist in me would say it's brightening up slightly but there's no sign of the rain relenting any time soon. To be honest, it may even be getting worse.

10:39am - The old adage 'no news is good news' does not tend to ring true in cricket, does it? The blotter's still doing overtime on the outfield, the umbrellas remain up and precipitation continues to fall.

10:21am -  While we keep our fingers crossed for some better news here in Leeds, you can read captain Eoin Morgan's thoughts on the new-look England squad ahead of this series here .

10:10am -  This won't come as any surprise but the start has been delayed. No sign of a let-up from Mother Nature currently.

9:59am -  I'm afraid to say the forecast does not look good for the entire day today. You can probably count the spectators currently inside the ground on one hand. The fact they are outnumbered by groundstaff armed with brooms should say it all.

9:50am - Good morning and welcome to a very wet Headingley where England's five-match NatWest Series against Australia is due to begin. As it stands, though, it looks highly unlikely that play will start on time at 10:15am with the heavens currently wide open in Yorkshire.
