Rain rules at Glamorgan

Only 15.5 overs were possible at a damp SWALEC Stadium as Derbyshire reached 47 for two on the opening day of their LV= County Championship Division Two clash at Glamorgan.

There had been a lengthy delay before play began at 2.40pm, and although most of the ground and pitch was dry and playable, water had seeped under the covers in the bowler's delivery stride at the Cathedral Road end of the ground.

When play did get under way, Derbyshire lost Chesney Hughes and captain Wayne Madsen cheaply after losing the toss before heavy showers arrived to send the players for an early tea and a premature end to a frustrating day.

The visitors were forced to make five changes from the side that defeated Gloucestershire last week, with five players injured and Billy Godleman suspended for two championship games.

Ben Slater and Hughes began quietly until former Derbyshire seamer Graham Wagg, in his fifth over, had Hughes driving too early and giving Craig Meschede a simple catch at mid-off.

The openers had put on 26 for the first wicket and they soon lost their second wicket when Andy Carter trapped Derbyshire skipper Wayne Madsen leg before for a single.

Slater reached 25 not out while Scott Elstone was unbeaten on two when the heavens opened to force an early finish to proceedings.

Glamorgan captain Jacques Rudolph said: "(I am) frustrated with that long wait before play began, but we have to get on with it, remain positive and although the weather will probably frustrate us further, we will try our best to win the game."
