Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes missed out on a world-record opening partnership but their heroics helped Bangladesh earn a draw against Pakistan in the first Test in Khulna.
Tamim became only the second Bangladesh player, after Mushfiqur Rahim, to score a Test double century and Kayes reached 150 before his dismissal brought an end to their 312-run first-wicket stand.
Their partnership fell 103 runs short of the world record set by South Africa's Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie in 2008, but helped the hosts reach 555 for six and avoid a ninth successive Test defeat against Pakistan.
Tamim and Kayes resumed Bangladesh's innings on Saturday morning on 273 and needed just eight overs to reach the 300-run mark and move the hosts into the lead.
Both played patiently to reach 150 but their marathon stand was brought to an end shortly before a rain-enforced lunch when Kayes charged down the wicket against Zulfiqar Babar but mistimed to long-off, where substitute fielder Babar Azam held the catch.
Kayes' innings, which bettered his previous best Test score by 20 runs, lasted 240 deliveries and included 16 fours and three sixes.
Mominul Haquehelped Tamim add 33 runs for the second wicket before he was bowled by Junaid Khan for 21, and Tamim's supreme innings ended when he was deceived by Mohammad Hafeez's off-spin and was stumped to leave Bangladesh on 399 for three.
Tamim's 206 lasted 278 balls and featured 17 fours and seven sixes and Hafeez, who scored a double-ton in Pakistan's first innings, led the applause as he walked off the Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium field.
Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur were pinned lbw by Junaid and Hafeez respectively to leave Bangladesh on 464 for five.
But any Pakistan hopes of a late batting collapse were dashed as Shakib Al-Hasan scored a well-crafted 76, including six fours and a six, and shared useful partnerships of 60 and 31 with Soumya Sarkar and Shuvagata Hom.
Captains Mushfiqur and Misbah-ul-Haq shook hands for the draw and will be looking for victory in the second and final Test, which begins in Dhaka in Wednesday.
