West Indies got their World Cup campaign back on track with a convincing 150-run win over Pakistan in the Pool B game at the Hagley Oval.
Dinesh Ramdin and Lendl Simmons each hit half-centuries before Andre Russell provided some fireworks at the end to propel West Indies up to a daunting total of 310 for six.
Rusell and Jerome Taylor then combined to help dismiss Pakistan for 160, which could have been a lot worse had it not been for half-centuries from Sohaib Maqsood and Umar Akmal which rescued the score from one for four.
After suffering a damaging loss to Ireland on Monday, West Indies again made a shaky start after being put in to bat by Misbah-ul-Haq.
Chris Gayle was dismissed for just four in the fifth over, and the innings looked in danger of stalling when Dwayne Smith went three overs later with just 28 on the board.
However Darren Bravo and Marlon Samuels combined for a partnership of 75 to provide a platform for the batsmen lower down the order
After Samuels fell to Haris Sohail, Bravo was forced to retire hurt after suffering a hamstring injury while on 49, but Ramdin and Simmons picked up the tempo and, aided by some sloppy Pakistan fielding, advanced the score towards 200 as the 40th over approached.
Ramdin was Sohail’s second dismissal when he went for 51, but Darren Sammy added 30 before Russell’s explosive hitting added 115 runs in the final 10 overs of the innings, with the all-rounder finishing unbeaten on 42 from just 13 balls.
Things went from bad to worse for Pakistan, as Taylor took two wickets in the first four balls of the innings to dismiss Nasir Jamshed and Younus Khan without scoring, before adding Sohail to his list of victims to finish with 3-15.
Captain Jason Holder got in on the act to dismiss Ahmed Shehzad for a single to leave Pakistan on their worst start in one-day history – one for four.
Misbah didn’t last long as Russell made an immediate impact with the ball, but Maqsood and Akmal added respectability to the score with composed half-centuries.
However once the pair were both gone, Russell, who took 3-33, and Suliemann Benn cleaned up to tail to secure an important victory.
