Experienced New Zealand all-rounder James Franklinhas signed on a two-year deal for Middlesex, who hope he will be able to feature for them as a non-overseas player through his Irish ancestry.

Having made his international debut in 2001, Franklin became a regular for his country in all formats from late 2004 until 2013, when he last appeared for the Black Caps.

Signing for Middlesex, where he has an option for a third year if both parties want, as a non-overseas player, which is subject to ECB discretion and registration, will effectively end his international career.

Before relocating to London in April the 34-year-old will finish the New Zealand season with the Wellington team he captains and could feature in the World Cup given he is on the Black Caps’ reserve player list.

The left-handed batsman and left-arm medium-pacer has plentiful county experience with Gloucestershire in particular, Essex, Glamorgan and last season Nottinghamshire.

James Franklin last played for New Zealand on the 2013 tour of England but could yet feature in the World Cup before joining Middlesex

Middlesex managing director of cricket Angus Fraser says Franklin’s arrival will compensate for the departure of all-rounder Garth Berg, whose serious shoulder injury saw the county cancel the last year of his contract.

Fraser said: “The loss of Gareth Berg through injury in 2014 was a hugely important factor as the season progressed. His absence prevented us from fielding a balanced side and his overs were missed.

“Despite James not having bowled with great frequency over the winter for Wellington, due to a side strain, we are confident that come April, his fitness levels will enable him to more than fill that role, offering both experience and variety as a left arm-seamer.”

Franklin said: “My family and I will relocate to London in April and we’re all very excited about what the future holds.

“Personally I’m really looking forward to playing for Middlesex, working with Angus Fraser and the rest of the coaching staff and being in a dressing room full of talented cricketers who will be wanting to help Middlesex win silverware and be a dominant force in county cricket in all formats.”
