Andrew Flintoff’s first significant impact in the Big Bash League was in vain as Michael Lumb and Riki Wessels helped Sydney Sixers to victory over Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.
Flintoff struck 46 from 32 deliveries in his fifth Big Bash appearance, aiding a recovery from 33 for four by sharing a stand of 93 with opening batsman Peter Forrest.
Flintoff, who hit a straight six and four fours, came mighty close to a first tournament fifty, on 44 clipping Moises Henriques aerially towards the long-leg rope where fine fielding prevented a maximum. Next ball, though, the former England all-rounder was held at cover.
Forrest made a measured 62 not out as Brisbane posted 147 for six, a score the Sixers comfortably overhauled with six wickets and 14 balls to spare.
Nottinghamshire duo Lumb and Wessels added 53 for the second wicket en route to 25 and 28 respectively. Flintoff’s sole over cost 10 runs.
The Sixers rise to third in the table, well-placed to reach the semi-finals, while Brisbane stay bottom with one win from six. Holders Perth Scorchers booked a semi spot by beating Hobart Hurricanes earlier in the day.
