Clarke set fitness deadline

Injured Australia captain Michael Clarke has been named in his country's World Cup squad but will be replaced if he cannot prove his fitness by the second group game.

Clarke underwent hamstring surgery after injuring himself in the first Test versus India a month ago, and has only just started running again.

That makes him unlikely to feature when the co-hosts start the tournament against England on February 14, but Cricket Australia has indicated it will draft a replacement if he is not passed fit by the time they take on Bangladesh a week later.

Clarke today told a media conference in Sydney: "I'll have my work cut out to prove my fitness. It won't be through a lack of effort and I'm confident I will be fit.

"I've been really disciplined with my day to day training and I think that will give me the best chance of walking out against Bangladesh.

"I still think I've got a lot to offer and I'd still love to contribute and lead this team in the World Cup."

National selector Rod Marsh confirmed there would be no leeway on Clarke's timetable.

"We want to be settled by that Bangladesh game. We don't want any talk about fitness concerns. We had to draw the line somewhere," he said.

"We want him there; don't make any mistakes about that. We want him to play, he wants to play, so all he has to do is get fit.

"He is one of the world's best batsmen and we want to give him every chance to prove his fitness for a tournament as important as this one."

The same 15-strong party will tackle England and India in the Tri-Series this month.

George Bailey will continue to lead the side in Clarke's absence having retained the vice-captaincy.

Bailey has proved a dependable stand-in in the past but there had been a temptation to promote Steven Smith, who has flourished since inheriting the Test reins.

Elsewhere in the squad, Nathan Lyon misses out in favour of Xavier Doherty for the solitary spinner's slot.

Lyon has played just eight one-day internationals, but made a late push for selection with 23 wickets in four Tests against India.

Doherty, with 57 ODI caps to his name, is seen as the most dependable limited-overs option.

Australia will carry four specialist seamers, with 21-year-old tyro Pat Cummins edging out veteran Ryan Harris for a spot alongside Mitchell Johnson, Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc.

Australia World Cup squad: Michael Clarke (capt), George Bailey (vice-capt), David Warner, Aaron Finch, Shane Watson, Steven Smith, Brad Haddin, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Marsh, James Faulkner, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Xavier Doherty.
