Lumb heroics in vain

Michael Lumb struck 80 in a losing cause as Sydney Sixers were dramatically defeated by 10 runs in a super over by Melbourne Stars in a thrilling Big Bash League clash at the MCG.

The Nottinghamshire left-hander blazed half-a-dozen fours and a trio of sixes in his 61-ball knock that lifted the Sixers to 150 for six.

But that was not enough for the Sixers to prevail, with the Stars levelling the scores courtesy of Kevin Pietersen’s 54 and James Faulkner and Tom Triffitt taking 15 from the final six deliveries, bowled by former Australia paceman Brett Lee.

That took the match to a super over and, after Faulkner lifted the Stars to 19 with two maximums off Lee, the Sixers were restricted to just nine.

John Hastings was handed the responsibility with the ball and the Durham all-rounder dismissed both Nick Maddinson and Moises Henriques to secure a second successive triumph for the Stars.

Earlier, Lumb was one of only two Sixers batsmen to reach double figures in their 20-over innings, Jordan Silk the other with an unbeaten 37.

Notts’ Riki Wessels, with just six, was one of two scalps for Hastings in his initial four-over spell while Hampshire’s new signing Jackson Bird dismissed dangerman Maddinson cheaply.

In reply, the Stars lost Sussex batsman Luke Wright for a golden duck to Lee but Pietersen and Cameron White added 70 for the second wicket.

White, formerly of Somerset and Northamptonshire, made 24 before he, Pietersen and former Hampshire batsman Glenn Maxwell fell in quick succession.

With 16 needed from the final over, Faulkner hit the first ball for four before Triffitt took 10 from the final three deliveries to take it to the eliminator, which the former starred in.
