Batsman Ian Cockbain, who scored a career-best 151 not out in June, has extended his contract with Gloucestershire until 2017.
The 27-year-old right-hander batted for nearly nine hours to force an improbable draw with Surrey at Bristol, hitting his third senior century in the process.
This year he also compiled three Twenty20 fifties and a match-winning 98 not out versus Worcestershire to help secure a place in the Royal London One-Day Cup quarter-finals.
Cockbain, who made his first-class debut in April 2011, signed for Gloucestershire having excelled during three seasons training and playing in the MCC Young Cricketers’ programme at Lord’s. Prior to that he played second XI cricket for Lancashire.
He said: “I am really pleased to have signed a new deal with Gloucestershire.
“I believe there are some very exciting times coming up for our squad. It was obviously a big loss to see the Gidman brothers leave, but this has now presented a fantastic challenge and opportunity for me to step up as one of the senior guys and to take on more responsibility in the group.”
Director of cricket John Bracewell added: “It’s great news to have signed Ian as he is in the prime of his career in regards to an ideal batting age.
“He has predominantly been used as a short-form player over the last few seasons, but his innings of great maturity against Surrey last season showed everyone that he can now move smoothly from white to red ball.
“If he can nail down a permanent place in all forms regularly he has the tactical nous to one day captain the side.”
