Moments of the season, part seven

After another memorable summer, ecb.co.uk’s Russell Staves has picked out his best moment in international cricket.

Jos Buttler flays 121 versus Sri Lanka at Lord’s

On the same day Carl Froch knocked out George Groves at Wembley Stadium, Jos Buttler flattened the Sri Lanka attack just a few miles away at Lord's to announce his arrival as a superstar in the making.

We had already seen glimpses of his talent, occasionally in bit-part, big-hitting roles in the final overs, although substantial scores that winter in Australia and the West Indies suggested brighter things were to come.

And indeed they were - his 121 from 74 balls in NW8 was the innings which made him a headline act.

England, chasing 301, had looked doomed when he walked to the crease at 111 for five.

Such was England's plight that Michael Vaughan tweeted that he would run home naked if Sri Lanka lost.

But Vaughan's bold remark almost came back to bite him on the (bare) bum as Buttler set about the bowling to give England a fighting chance.

Fortunately for the former England captain - and anyone who would have witnessed the streak - Vaughan was spared a humiliation not seen since his Jive on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ when Buttler was run out in the final over, ending England's hopes of a seemingly impossible win.

But it was a sensational century which many, the fully-clothed Vaughan included, described as the best by an England player in an ODI.

It had everything - the trademark ramp, reverse-sweep, lofted drives over extra cover and swotted pull strokes. Get the protractor and compass out - this was 360-degree scoring.

Jos Buttler, who sped to a century in just 61 balls at Lord's, makes setting the field a nightmare for Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews

Just as Groves would be left staring into space a few hours later, so were the Sri Lanka fielders as Buttler launched four sixes into the north London sky.

If you thought Froch had quick hands, then you should watch Buttler flashing a drive through the off side.

But the dazzling strokes were only half of what made his innings so special. Batting in a seemingly lost cause in front of a capacity crowd, live on Sky Sports, Buttler was a picture of calm.

"It was so much fun," Buttler told me after the game. "We had such a good time out there."

Is there more to come? "Hopefully I can top that one day," he said.

Now that would be something.
