Yorkshire’s players and staff have visited Buckingham Palace to formally receive the LV= County Championship trophy and medals from His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.
They were accompanied by Royal London Women’s One-Day Cup champions Kent on Thursday for the traditional post-season recognition of the men’s and women’s county championship winners (the Royal London Women’s One-Day Cup was formerly known as the Women’s County Championship).
The Duke, who has been patron and ‘Twelfth Man’ of the Lord’s Taverners, the UK’s leading youth cricket and disability sports charity, since 1950, presented the Lord’s Taverners ECB trophy to Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale and team-mates including Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Tim Bresnan.
First-team coach Jason Gillespie and president Dickie Bird were among the Yorkshire representatives attending the special Royal engagement, which The Duke has hosted for the county champions every year since Hampshire won in 1973.
With Charlotte Edwards in Australia playing for Western Fury, The Duke presented the Lady Taverners ECB trophy to Kent acting captain Tammy Beaumont and her team-mates.
The Yorkshire players and staff then moved on to 10 Downing Street to meet The Prime Minister and then went to the House of Commons for a reception arranged by Nigel Adams, MP for Selby and Ainsty.
