Charlotte Edwards nominated for ICC award

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is showing support for England women’s captain Charlotte Edwards after she was nominated by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the coveted 2014 ICC LG People’s Choice Award.

Edwards is the first ever female cricketer to be nominated for the award, with previous winners including Indian duo Sachin Tendulkar (2010) and MS Dhoni (2013).

To mark the nomination, ECB has released a video celebrating her best moments during a ground-breaking year for the 34-year-old.

Votes can now be placed either online or on Twitter by using the hashtags #Edwards and #lgiccawards.Voting closes at 20:00 (GMT) on Thursday October 30.

Edwards, who has scored 9,504 international runs in the the women’s game - more than anybody else in history - since making her debut in 1996, steered a successful defence of the Women's Ashes in Australia at the start of 2014 before taking the side to the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 final in Bangladesh in April.

She also enjoyed a superb summer with the bat, amassing 306 runs - including a century and three fifties - in five matches during limited-overs series victories against India and South Africa. The England captain has scored more runs than any other player in international cricket in the women's game

The other nominees for the 2014 ICC LG People’s Choice Award include Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews alongside Mitchell Johnson (Australia), Dale Steyn (South Africa) and India’s Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

ECB Head of England Women’s Cricket, Clare Connor said: “Charlotte’s nomination is fully deserved, following an extraordinary year as captain during which she has continued to lead by example with her heavy run-scoring. It’s wonderful for the women’s game to see her receiving global recognition from the ICC alongside some of the current stars of the men’s game.”

ECB Chairman, Giles Clarke, added: “Charlotte Edwards has been a major force in international women's cricket for nearly 20 years. As well as her exceptional feats on the field she’s a huge credit to the game across the globe and a magnificent role model for others.”
