Northamptonshire batsman David Sales has announced he will bring his 19-year professional career to a close at the end of the season.

Sales first made his name by becoming the youngest person to score a double-hundred in the County Championship when he thumped 210 not out against Worcestershire, aged 18.

He has gone on to make over 20,000 runs for the county in all formats of the game and has represented England Lions, although he could not break through into the senior team.

David Sales remains a regular for Northamptonshire but will bring down the curtain on his career at the end of the domestic campaign

"I've thoroughly enjoyed my career and the last 20 years at Northants Cricket and, whilst disappointed that I didn't play at the very highest level, I will look back with pride at my achievements," said the 36-year-old.

Northants head coach David Ripley said Sales retirement signals the end of an era at the club.

"An international-class batsman, top slip fielder, astute cricket brain and humorous contributor to dressing room banter, he will be sadly missed," Ripley said.
