Tim Ambrose struck an impressive 167 to lift Warwickshire into a commanding 295-run lead over Middlesex on day two of their LV= County Championship match at Edgbaston.
Warwickshire were all out for 462 but not before wicketkeeper-batsman Ambrose put his team firmly in the driving seat with a magnificent innings that came from 269 balls and included 20 fours.
The 31-year-old was ably supported by Jeetan Patel, who made 105, and a fifty from Chris Wright as the hosts’ tail maximised Middlesex's frustration.
Warwickshire resumed on 123 for four after an eventful first day on which Middlesex were dismissed for 167.
Only one run was added to that overnight score before Ateeq Javid edged to Ollie Rayner at second slip when aiming a cut at Steven Finn on 28.
Middlesex collapsed from 34 for without loss to 66 for eight on the first day and their opponents looked in danger of crashing too when Keith Barker was dismissed by Finn six overs later.
Barker attempted to drive the ball back down the ground but he mistimed and Finn did well to dive forward and collect.
With the score 160 for six, there was room for optimism for Middlesex but a superb 175-run partnership between Ambrose and Patel swung the game firmly in Warwickshire’s favour.

Ambrose's 167 was the right-hander's first significant score of the season having failed to exceed 29 in his previous six innings, but he was composed and controlled throughout.
Patel was in good form too and hit a spectacular six to bring up his century, but the elation perhaps sparked a lapse in concentration as the New Zealander was caught behind next ball by John Simpson off Joe Denly.
Richard Jones entered the crease and added 15 more to Warwickshire's total before being trapped lbw by James Harris shortly after tea with the score 348 for eight.
But Middlesex were unable to finish their opponents off as Wright hit 52 before being stumped by Simpson off Dawid Malan with the total on 461.
Part-time leg-spinner Malan then held a return catch from Ambrose to wrap up the innings.
That left an awkward over for Middlesex to negotiate before the end of the day as Harris was sent in as nightwatchman along with regular opener Sam Robson. The former played out six balls to reach the close unscathed.
