Yorkshire captain Andrew Gale notched a 16th first-class hundred as his side took control against defending champions Durham in their LV= County Championship clash at the Emirates Durham ICG.
Gale set the example as the visitors marched on from 299 for three at start of play to declare on 589 for eight, with the skipper posting 124 and valuable support coming from Jonny Bairstow and Adil Rashid, who made 95 and 68 respectively.
It was the third-highest score made on the ground and Durham faced a stern inquisition with the ball and they tried to make a response to an intimidating total.
In the end, though, some patient batting paid off as the hosts ended day two 62 for one.
Keaton Jennings was the man to go for Durham, caught behind off Ryan Sidebottom, though the umpire took some time to give the decision.

Earlier, Gale and Bairstow added another 156 before the latter was trapped lbw by Chris Rushworth.
Gale departed soon afterwards, Phil Mustard taking the catch behind the stumps off Jennings, before Rashid and Andy Hodd, who made 41 not out, pushed up the scoring rate with a partnership of 87.
Rashid's dismissal, caught by Kumar Sangakkara in the deep off Rushworth, sparked a minor collapse.
Tim Bresnan edged a ball from Graham Onions to the wicketkeeper and the Durham seamer then had Liam Plunkett plumb lbw for a golden duck.
Onions was on a hat-trick, but he was denied the chance to go for the glory as Yorkshire elected to declare.
The pressure was on Durham, but opening batsman Mark Stoneman made light of it with an unbeaten 48 despite some tight bowling - especially from Bresnan who conceded just six runs from his seven overs, including five maidens.
