Jack Brooks claimed career-best first-class figures for Yorkshire to rip out his former county Northamptonshire for 94.
Brooks returned 5-36 as his former employers were skittled in 30 overs.
Gary Ballance’s 174 - his best first-class score for Yorkshire - had earlier helped the White Rose post 459 for nine declared.
After further pressing his claims to remain in the England Test team, Ballance was eventually lbw to Andrew Hall. He therefore became the eighth Yorkshire player given out lbw to equal a first-class record in an innings.
Northamptonshire then continued to keep umpires Mark Benson and Ian Gould busy as they capitulated in the afternoon session to be left with a mammoth deficit of 365.
While the rain set in after tea to provide some respite, Yorkshire had already made the decision to enforce the follow-on with the weather forecast to hang around.
When play does resume, the hosts’ veteran Ryan Sidebottom will be on a hat-trick after wrapping up the Northants innings from consecutive balls.
Maurice Chambers was bowled by a delivery that kept low before Muhammad Azhar Ullah offered a comfortable catch to Ballance at first slip.
It was Brooks who did the major damage, however, after he was switched to the Football Stand End.
He and Sidebottom had already prised out the top three inside 11 overs, and the former stunned his old team-mates with a seven-over burst of 4-19.

Brooks struck twice in his second over after being swung around, coincidentally at the same time the Super League match between Leeds and Salford kicked-off in Headingley's adjoining rugby ground.
The 29-year-old found the edge of Rob Newton for Andy Hodd to comfortably pouch before Hall squeezed a low catch to Kane Williamson at third slip.
The wickets kept falling as David Willey flirted with a wide ball that flew to gully before he had scored.
Steven Crook thrashed a pair of boundaries yet, when he tried a second lavish cut, Adil Rashid had pushed around at backward point and held a sharp chance.
Brooks' spell could have been even better but he failed to hit the stumps when Matthew Spriegel had wandered too far out of his crease at the non-striker's end.
It mattered not, even though Spriegel offered the sternest resistance in an unbeaten 29, as Sidebottom completed the job.
Earlier, Ballance and the Yorkshire tail added 131 in 33 overs before lunch.
Sidebottom copped a blow to the head from an Azhar bouncer in the fourth over, which caused him to bleed.
It was about the only concern he had alongside Ballance as they frustrated the visiting attack for a further 21.3 overs to push their eighth-wicket stand to 72 runs.
When Sidebottom was eventually caught in front by James Middlebrook, using 74 balls for his 15, Ballance fell in the next over when playing back to Hall to be the eighth successive lbw victim.
Northants' frustration was not over as last pair Brooks and Steven Patterson added 61 in 10.2 overs before skipper Andrew Gale finally called his players in.
