Ed Joyce hits out during his innings of 43 as Ireland secured a 21-run Duckworth/Lewis victory over UAE at the World Twenty20

Ireland are in pole position to win Group B and qualify for the Super 10 stage of the World Twenty20 after a 21-run Duckworth/Lewis victory over United Arab Emirates.

Spinner Paul Stirling took 2-12 opening the bowling and Kevin O’Brien impressed with 2-17 as UAE stumbled to 123 for six.

Stirling was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the elbow early in Ireland’s reply, but skipper Will Porterfield and Ed Joyce took the score to 95.

Joyce became the first of Sharif Asadullah’s two victims for 43, but Porterfield was still there when the floodlights in Sylhet failed with the score on 103 for three.

With no more action possible play was eventually abandoned due to rain, leaving Ireland top of their group with two wins out of two.

Porterfield’s side will progress if they can avoid defeat to Netherlands in their final game on Friday, while Ireland’s superior run-rate could see them advance with a narrow defeat.
