Broad: Better start is needed

Stuart Broad has called on England to apply themselves better at the start of their innings when they face West Indies in the second Twenty20 international tomorrow.

Chasing 171 for victory yesterday, the tourists failed to recover from losing half their side inside the first 10 overs and could only manage 143 for nine, with Tim Bresnan hitting an unbeaten 47 and Ravi Bopara contributing 42.

Stuart Broad, left, admits a solid start is vital if England are to level the Twenty20 series with West Indies in Barbados

Broad, who will miss the rest of the rubber with a knee injury, knows his side need to improve from the 27-run defeat in Barbados if they are to level the series.

“That’s Twenty20 cricket for you,” Broad told ecb.co.uk. “I think West Indies outplayed us, there is no doubt about that. We shouldn’t let that take away from what we have done in the last couple of weeks and we have got time to improve in the next two games.

“We were pretty happy with 170, maybe it was a touch over par, but we never got going with the bat. You need one of your top three to get in and that hasn’t happened for a while.”

Broad also admits England need to adapt to the conditions, with spin more effective than seam yesterday.

“It did look harder to score off the slower bowlers, you look at the seam bowlers and they all went at eight an over and did not take a lot of wickets,” Broad added. “It just seemed to kiss on beautifully for the seam bowlers.”
