Derbyshire all-rounder Peter Burgoyne has been granted an extended period of absence from cricket.

A statement released on the county’s website confirmed the 20-year-old has been struggling with stress-related issues for some time.

Peter Burgoyne has been granted leave by Derbyshire and will be supported by the ECB, PCA and his county during his recovery

Following discussions between Burgoyne, Derbyshire and the Professional Cricketers' Association it has been decided that the player should spend time away from the game to prioritise his recovery.

Derbyshire will work alongside the PCA to support Burgoyne throughout this process.

Chief executive Simon Storey said: "We are obviously disappointed that Peter won't be actively involved with final preparations for the new season.

“He is an exciting young cricketer with bags of potential and a promising future ahead of him.

"Unfortunately, the pressures on young cricketers trying to make it in the professional game can be very challenging to handle.

“We have a number of welfare programmes in place at the club, while the PCA and ECB also offer extensive support to players and staff.

“We've assured Peter that we will continue to do all we can to support him as he concentrates on making a full recovery."

A former England Under-19 international, Burgoyne made the breakthrough into Derbyshire’s first team last summer, playing five LV= County Championship games and nine limited-overs matches.
