The first Twenty20 international between South Africa and Australia was abandoned without a ball being bowled in Port Elizabeth.
Play was scheduled to begin at 2.30pm local time (12.30 GMT) but heavy rain beforehand caused that to be put back.
Despite a couple of hope-inducing interludes, the inclement weather returned and the match was eventually called off just after 3.45pm local time.
The two teams will move on to Durban on Wednesday and then Centurion on Friday for the remaining two scheduled games. Australia won the preceding three-Test series 2-1.
