The fourth day of the ICC Under-19s World Cup brought the first major shock as Afghanistan overcame Australia by 36 runs in Group D.

Having elected to bat, the minnows immediately made life difficult as Mohammad Mujtaba hit 75, Ihsanullah 63 and Hashmatullah Shaidi 57 in a total of 253 all out.

It was Abdullah Adil who starred with the ball, claiming 4-45 as Australia were dismissed for 217.

Australia’s defeat paved the way for Bangladesh to move to the summit of the standings courtesy of a 52-run victory over Namibia.

Mosaddek Hossain’s 70 not out followed up 65 from opener Sadman Islam as the Tigers posted a competitive 233 for five.

Ultimately, Namibia never got close, skittled for 181 as Mustafizur Rahman and Mosaddek Hossain claimed three wickets apiece.

In Group A, India and Pakistan managed contrasting victories.

For the former, who overcame their bitter rivals on Saturday, a contest with Scotland was not the plain-sailing affair they may have expected.

It appeared likely to be when Scotland were dismissed for a mere 88, Kuldeep Yadav and Aamir Gani grabbing four scalps apiece.

However, the sub-continental giants quickly found themselves 22 for five as Chayank Gosain grabbed three wickets and Gavin Main two.

Just when it appeared an upset may be on the cards, however, Sarfaraz Khan and Deepak Hooda showed their cool and ended unbeaten on 45 and 24 respectively in a five-wicket win.

Pakistan had no such problems against Papua New Guinea as they were powered to 283 for eight by 88 from Imam ul-Haq and Sami Aslam’s 62.

Their opponents did not put up much of a fight in reply, crumbling to 138 all out as Zafar Gohar claimed 4-35 in a 145-run win.
