Anya Shrubsole basked in the winning feeling after England Women hugely enhanced their chances of retaining the Ashes via a victory in the sole Test.
With the old enemies locking horns in the multi-format system that proved so successful this summer, the importance of the four-day encounter was great.
Indeed, that game is worth six points, compared with the other six – three one-day internationals and as many Twenty20s – bringing just two.
Therefore, England emerging victorious by 61 runs gives them a great chance of achieving their ultimate ambition.
“I am absolutely ecstatic,” she told ecb.co.uk. “I am a little bit tired because it’s been a long four days but it was an unbelievable team effort.
“The whole 15, even the girls who were not in the starting XI, played their part and I think we fully deserved the win for the fight and character we showed.
“The teams are really evenly matched and, while we will celebrate this tonight, we know there are six more really important games.”
With Australia entering the final day 57 for seven in pursuit of 185, the tourists were very much favourites.
Elysse Perry threatened to create a twist in the tale but Shrubsole made her the first of three wickets she claimed today.
“Over the course of the game, we saw that if you got one wicket, two, three, four or even five came quickly after it,” she added.
“We knew that all it would take is one ball and that’s what it took. From there on, we closed out the game really ruthlessly.”
Today’s scalps took Shrubsole’s match tally to seven – an effort that gave her great delight given she missed the recent tour of the West Indies, even if she was keen to deflect the praise.
“I am really pleased to have contributed but there is no one person in this team who can take credit for this win,” said Shrubsole.
“We’ve fought and fought from day one; that has shown and we have fully deserved our win.”
