Sri Lanka’s seamers bowled them into a position of strength on the opening day of the second Test against Pakistan in Dubai.

Nuwan Pradeep took three wickets, while Suranga Lakmal and Shaminda Eranga claimed two apiece before left-arm spinner Rangana Herath mopped up the tail as Pakistan were bowled out for 165.

A fine day for Sri Lanka was completed as they reached 57 for one, just 108 behind, by stumps.

Opener Khurram Manzoor’s 73 was the only bright spot in Pakistan’s batting.

Ahmed Shehzad fell cheaply, trapped lbw by Pradeep, who also bowled Mohammad Hafeez for 21.

Sri Lanka made another key breakthrough when Younus Khan chased a wide one to be caught behind off Eranga. The seamer struck in his next over, too, as Misbah-ul-Haq edged behind.

Manzoor was next to go, caught behind off Lakmal - who Asad Shafiq then drove to short cover.

Sarfraz Ahmed edged behind off Pradeep and, although Bilawal Bhatti provided some stubborn resistance with 24 not out, Herath finished the job.

Dimuth Karunaratne impressed thereafter, striking a fine 32. He eventually fell lbw to Junaid Khan yet that did not take the gloss off a fine day for Sri Lanka.
