Yorkshire opener Joe Sayers has announced his retirement from first-class cricket.

The 30-year-old, a top-order batsman, made his first-class debut 2002 and went on to score 5,457 runs in 109 matches.

He retires as one of just seven Yorkshire players to have carried his bat through an innings more than once.

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a professional cricketer with Yorkshire,” said Sayers.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody associated with the club, in particular the supporters, and I wish the lads all the best for the 2014 season.”

White Rose chairman Colin Graves added: “Joe is a great guy and I would like to thank him for his contribution over the last few years and wish him well in the future.”
