Darren Bravo dug in as the West Indies offered some resistance as they bid to avoid an innings defeat in the first Test against New Zealand in Dunedin.
Tim Southee was the star man on the third morning as the Black Caps dismissed the tourists for 213 in response to their first-innings 609 for nine declared, with Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 76 and 40 from Bravo the only noteworthy scores.
The West Indies were asked to follow-on and Bravo and Kirk Edwards produced a stand of 117 to help the tourists close on 168 for two, with the latter falling for 59 towards the end of the day.
But Bravo will look to add to an unbeaten 72 on day four, with the Windies 228 runs shy of making the hosts bat again.
It was a different story in the morning when Bravo drove at Southee and was caught by Brendon McCullum, with West Indies having added just three runs to their overnight 67.
Samuels followed three overs later, caught at slip off Southee, who then removed Narsingh Deonarine to reduce the visitors to 106 for five.
But Chanderpaul was in fine form, striking a boundary to take him past 11,000 runs in Test cricket.
But his stand of 68 with Denesh Ramdin was ended when Boult had Ramdin caught behind and the bowler then trapped Chanderpaul lbw in his next over.
The final three batsmen could offer little to boost the West Indies' total as Ish Sodhi picked up a couple of cheap wickets.
And there was more of the same second time around, with Kieran Powell edging Boult to Southee at third slip before tea.
Edwards reached a half-century before falling to Sodhi, but Marlon Samuels stuck around to keep Bravo company until the end of the day.
