Bell on shortlist for BBC award

Star England batsman Ian Bell has been named on the shortlist for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.

The Warwickshire man cracked 562 runs as England won the Ashes last summer, equalling the English record for a five-Test home series set by Denis Compton in 1948.

Bell hit centuries at Trent Bridge, Lord's and Emirates Durham ICG to help England win the series 3-0.

It was the fourth time the 31-year-old has won the Ashes, having lifted the urn in 2005, 2009 and 2010-11.

Ian Bell, who hit three Ashes centuries last summer, is on the shortlist for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year AwardBell, one of 10 contenders, is hoping to become only the second cricketer to win the prestigious award since Sir Ian Botham in 1981 following a summer of Ashes glory.

The last cricketer to win the award was Andrew Flintoff in 2005 - another year when the country caught Ashes fever.

The public only will decide the winner from the shortlist of 10 contenders during the live show with a vote.
