Samit Patel's third LV= County Championship century of the season revived Nottinghamshire's fortunes against Warwickshire in their Division One clash at Trent Bridge.

Patel, who had survived a hat-trick delivery when arriving at the crease on the first evening, drove fluently to post his 18th first-class hundred before falling for 117 from 171 deliveries, with 18 fours.

The all-rounder passed 1,000 first-class runs for the campaign before being dismissed by Darren Maddy, edging to slip via a huge deflection from the wicketkeeper's gloves.

Patel’s efforts helped Notts reach 359 in response to Warwickshire's first-innings 298.

The visitors then lost two wickets in the early stages of their second innings, ending 34 runs adrift on 27 for two.

With Peter McKay absent through ankle ligament damage, sustained while batting, the Bears summoned Jamie Atkinson to deputise behind the stumps.

The 23-year old Hong Kong international kept tidily and claimed an important catch just before lunch as he clung onto a sharp edge by David Hussey off Chris Woakes.

The Australian made 28, as did Steven Mullaney who lofted a sharply rising delivery straight to third man to give Steffan Piolet only his second championship wicket.

Riki Wessels, who shared a stand of 101 for the sixth wicket with Patel, passed 50 for the first time this season on his way to making 77.

Due to be replaced by James Taylor for the second half of the match, Wessels made the most of his limited appearance time and seemed well set for three figures himself until run out by a direct hit from Woakes at cover.

That dismissal heralded a typically cavalier 46 from Andre Adams, who hit two sixes and six fours in his 26-ball stay as the second new ball was despatched for 29 in its two overs.

Chris Read's batting woes continued. The Nottinghamshire skipper, with just one half-century this term, faced 26 deliveries without scoring before steering Maurice Chambers into the hands of point.

Chambers was the pick of the visitors' attack, finishing with 4-79, after picking up the scalp of Ajmal Shahzad, who was last man out, also for 28.

In the closing 14 overs, Ian Westwood had his off stump knocked over by Luke Fletcher.

Adams' fine day then continued as he picked up his 300th wicket for Nottinghamshire when Varun Chopra was given out lbw shouldering arms.
