Notts rocked by Chambers late show

Maurice Chambers continued his fine start to life with Warwickshire by claiming two late wickets on day one of the LV= County Championship match with Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Having taken a five-for on debut against Sussex last week, Chambers was largely responsible for reducing Nottinghamshire to 14 for three after Warwickshire posted 298 all out.

The on-loan Essex seamer, who played for Notts’ second XI earlier this summer, snared nightwatchman Luke Fletcher and Michael Lumb with successive balls to follow up Keith Barker’s dismissal of Alex Hales for a golden duck.

Warwickshire’s total was built around respective scores of 76 and 66 from opener Varun Chopra and number nine Jeetan Patel.

Teenage wicketkeeper Pete McKay also contributed a handy 33 down the order, but twisted his ankle in doing so and was replaced by Nottinghamshire second-team keeper Matt Cross at the start of the hosts’ reply.

Chopra faced 114 deliveries and hit nine boundaries before driving loosely at Fletcher to provide Chris Read with one of his four catches.

The dismissal of the Bears' captain - at 125 for three - heralded the start of a mini-collapse which saw four wickets fall for just 11 runs.

Andre Adams, arguably back to something resembling his best after a injury-hit summer, was the chief benefactor of Warwickshire's afternoon malaise and returned 4-77 while Fletcher claimed 4-56.

Adams made the initial breakthrough of the day, tempting Ian Westwood to feather an awayswinger through to Read, who gratefully completed the 900th dismissal of his career.

Although Ateeq Javid soon followed, fending Harry Gurney to slip for nought, the visitors lunched well on 103 for two before running aground as six wickets fell during the afternoon.

Fletcher removed Chopra and then had Steffan Piolet caught behind for just a single, after the all-rounder had been hastily summoned from the Emirates Durham ICG where he was due to make his Sussex debut as a loanee.

Notts were gifted another wicket as Chris Woakes slipped over when responding to a call from Darren Maddy and was comfortably run out after smart work from Read.

Thirty-nine-year old Maddy made 47 a week after seemingly playing the final match of his county career, having been recalled to bolster a Bears side devoid of at least 10 first teamers due to a combination of injuries and international call-ups.

Patel adding 88 with 18-year-old McKay, who was forced to bat with a runner in an eventful championship debut.
