England fast bowler Chris Tremlett took his 400th first-class wicket but Derbyshire continued to dominate on the second day of the LV County Championship match against Surrey at Derby.
Wayne Madsen, who shared a stand of 265 in 61 overs with Shivnarine Chanderpaul, scored 152 and wicketkeeper Richard Johnson equalled his career-best of 72 as Derbyshire posted 452 all out, their highest score at home this summer, despite Tremlett’s 5-95.
Surrey lost Rory Burns in the opening over of their reply and, although Arun Harinath and Vikram Solanki batted through 15 overs, trailed by 417 runs at stumps on 35 for one, still needing another 268 to avoid the follow-on.
Madsen reached his fourth century against Surrey when he square-drove Zander de Bruyn for his 11th four as Derbyshire’s third-wicket stand continued to blossom.
It was more than an hour before the visitors finally broke through. Chanderpaul, who had hardly played a false stroke in cruising to 129 from 184 balls, was surprised by a Stuart Meaker ball and fell to a diving catch from Ricky Ponting at gully.
The West Indian’s partnership with Madsen had put Derbyshire in a strong position, although Surrey - armed with a second new ball - threatened to fight back with three further wickets either side of lunch.
Wes Durston and debutant Ben Slater were caught behind off Tremlett before Stuart Meaker beat Madsen’s attempted drive.
Johnson made sure the skipper’s 259-ball innings was not wasted by sharing a seventh-wicket stand of 59 in 29 overs with David Wainwright.
Both played carefully to take the sting out of Surrey's pacemen and Johnson then added a further 37 for the last wicket with Mark Footitt after Wainwright and Turner had departed.
Johnson's excellent innings ended when he tried to steer Tremlett down to third man and found the hands of Gary Wilson at first slip.
Burns was then run out by Madsen when going for a third to long-off in the opening over of Surrey’s first innings.
Solanki survived a blow to the body from a Footitt lifter to help Harinath deny Derbyshire further success.
