Muhammad Azhar Ullah and Trent Copeland each took three wickets as Northamptonshire roared to an innings-and-25-run win over Glamorgan in the LV= County Championship inside three days.

Glamorgan collapsed in the afternoon session and were bowled out for a meagre 187, Copeland taking 3-41 and fellow seamer Azhar 3-42.

Promotion-chasing Northants were therefore able to celebrate a first success in six championship matches, not to mention a second innings victory over Glamorgan at Wantage Road in three years.

The visitors began their second innings at the start of day three, needing 212 to make Northants bat again, and suffered an early blow in the 10th over when Gareth Rees was well caught by David Sales at second slip off Copeland.

Former Australia paceman Copeland struck again when trapping Murray Goodwin lbw for five, but Will Bragg and Chris Cooke took Glamorgan to lunch on 86 for two.

Bragg departed for 44 in the fifth over of the afternoon when he dragged on facing Azhar, ending a stand of 70.

Northants made further inroads three overs later when Steven Crook pinned Jim Allenby lbw and Cooke’s handy innings of 42 came to an end when he gloved Azhar down the leg side.

It was becoming a sorry procession for Glamorgan as their captain and wicketkeeper Mark Wallace was also taken by Murphy, this time off Crook.

John Glover soon followed after making only a single, the third wicket to fall in 12 balls, and Andrew Hall got in on the act with two of the final three wickets either side of Copeland removing Dean Cosker.

Graham Wagg was left stranded on 34 as the match was brought to an end two overs before the scheduled tea break.
