I thought my chance had gone - Carberry

Opener Michael Carberry will this week attempt to revive an England career that he had almost given up on.

The 32-year-old returns to England duty for the first time in over three years for this week's two Twenty20 internationals against Australia.

Carberry was on Tuesday morning also included in the 14-man one-day international squad - an opportunity he admits was "beyond his wildest dreams" even just six weeks ago.

He made his only England appearance in the Test arena - during the 2010 tour of Bangladesh - but his form in the shorter formats for Hampshire this summer have prompted the England selectors to renew their interest.

"About six weeks ago it was beyond my wildest dreams I guess, but (it is) nice to be back in the England fold," he said. "I'm thoroughly looking forward to the series ahead."

Carberry was the second-highest run-scorer in this year's Friends Life t20 as Hampshire reached finals day for a fourth successive year.

He has also been a key part of the Royals' run to the semi-finals of the Yorkshire Bank 40 and will get the chance to prove his credentials in national colours on home soil, with Thursday's opening Twenty20 at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.

"It's been a very kind ground to me over many years," he said. "It'll be great to play for England in front of my home crowd. I've had tonnes of support since the news came out that I've been picked so I'm really looking forward to it."

Carberry's form has been timely, with England beginning preparations for next year's World Twenty20 in Bangladesh before the 50-over World Cup in 18 months’ time.

With the core of England's Ashes-winning team also rested for the upcoming limited-overs fixtures, the matches loom as the perfect chance for Carberry to stake his claim ahead of those tournaments.

"That's making the step up now," he said. "It's all about dealing with the pressure and hopefully I can do that.

"I don't see how I'm going to change anything much from what I've done before. I'm pretty experienced now so I'll just stick to my game-plan, what's worked for me over the past couple of years, and hopefully it's good enough."
