Only 22.4 overs were bowled on the third day at the Emirates Durham ICG, but Durham made good progress towards a sixth LV= County Championship win of the season by taking seven Surrey wickets.
Four went to left-arm swing bowler Jamie Harrison, who finished with 5-31 as the visitors were dismissed for 108 then took the first wicket when they followed on 313 behind.
Two wickets in two balls during Usman Arshad's second over reduced Surrey to 33 for three but, with Hashim Amla showing his class, they had advanced to 52 without further loss by the time bad light then rain ended play.
Harrison, a 22-year-old Lancastrian who was picked up by Durham from Sedbergh School, took 4-112 on his championship debut at Taunton in May last year.
But after playing in the next two games his season was ended by a stress fracture to his right shin.
Having worked his way back to full fitness, Harrison has featured regularly for the Second XI and gained selection this week following injuries to Graham Onions and Callum Thorp.
Surrey resumed on 97 for six, but acting captain Gareth Batty slapped a low catch to Mark Stoneman at point off Chris Rushworth in the second over.
Harrison did the rest, pinning Chris Tremlett lbw before twice hitting Tim Linley on the boot with swinging yorkers. The first lbw appeal was rejected by umpire Michael Gough, but he could not turn down the second.
Last man Jade Dernbach decided a wild swing was his best option and lost his off stump, ensuring Steven Davies ended unbeaten on 41.
In the fourth over of Surrey’s second innings Arun Harinath shuffled across and was bowled round his legs by Harrison.
The youngster also beat Amla, but the South African and Rory Burns survived to reach lunch on 13 for one.
On the resumption Amla hit two fours in Arshad's first over, but the first ball of the debutant’s second induced an edged drive from left-hander Burns, which was caught by Scott Borthwick at second slip.
Vikram Solanki then gloved a leg-side catch to Phil Mustard before Amla made his way to 32.
