Yet that is not as dramatic as what's happening at Taunton. Adam Lyth, bowling his part-time off-spin, has two wickets in two deliveries! Alex Barrow and Peter Trego fall in quick succession before Craig Meschede survives the hat-trick ball.

Meanwhile, rain has stopped play at New Road in the first over of Worcestershire's reply and Derbyshire are back out after tea versus Surrey.

4:52pm - Dawson brings up a 165-ball fifty for Hampshire with his eighth four.

It might not be long before Sajid Mahmood has a half-century to his name as well. The former Lancashire paceman is 41 not out as Essex's fightback continues.

@CricketingBears on Twitter: It's thumping down again at Hove

4:36pm - Derbyshire may have lost two early wickets, but a brisk third-wicket stand between Wayne Madsen and Shivnarine Chanderpaul is repairing the damage. Shiv has 30 from 29 balls!

Meanwhile, Northants and Hampshire are back on and so are Essex and Worcestershire.

4:32pm - It's a time for celebration on both sides of the Pennines.

Yorkshire's Ryan Sidebottom has Elgar caught at point to put Somerset in a spot of bother at 120 for four.

At Aigburth, Glen Chapple grabs first-class wicket number 901 by trapping Chris Dent lbw.

4:22pm - Essex are 173 for seven as tea is taken.

4:15pm - Westley and Sajid Mahmood have now put on 52 for Essex's eighth wicket at New Road, the latter striking five fours.

2:50pm - Derbyshire have won the belated toss at Derby and will bat first against Surrey. Young batsman Ben Slater makes his debut for the hosts, while the visiting line-up contains a certain RT Ponting.

Ryan ten Doeschate is counter-attacking for Essex, who are 54 for three.

12:20pm - The rain appears to have eased at Taunton, where Rashid is closing in on a second century against Somerset this month.

Northants have kept the squeeze on Hampshire and been rewarded with a second scalp, Michael Carberry caught at second slip off Trent Copeland.

Lancashire have moved beyond 200 and Simon Katich is now just four shy of a hundred.
