6:21pm - Peter Burgoyne picks up five from the last over of the day and Derbyshire end on 279 for six.

4:19pm -  Essex also make an early breakthrough after tea, and it's a hugely significant one. Sales is on his way back to the pavilion after being bowled by Graham Napier for a superb 131. England Under-19 skipper Ben Duckett is next man in.

4:15pm -  Middlesex strike early in the evening session. Adam Voges' third over of the contest delivers his first wicket, as Richard Johnson attempts a loft over mid-on but can only pick out Harris.

3:32pm - Just two balls after Kieswetter celebrated his half-century, he sees Hildreth depart at the other end, caught at slip off Tom Milnes. Somerset are 154 for four.

3:27pm - Kieswetter hits Keith Barker to the boundary three times in the same over, the last of which moves the wicketkeeper to 50.

3:05pm -  Peters only needs three more deliveries before recording a hundred, but he departs two balls later. David Masters finally breaks the second-wicket partnership, which added 205 runs to the total.

3:02pm - After 18 dot-balls, Peters takes a single to move to 99. He will be hoping his next single does not take as long to score.

3pm -  Wayne Madsen follows up celebrating reaching 1,000 LV=CC runs for the campaign by reaching a fifty with a seventh boundary of his 95-ball knock.

2:44pm - But Slater's watchful innings has come to an end! Harris has him caught behind by wicketkeeper John Simpson. Shivnarine Chanderpaul is next man in.

It took the 35-year-old 133 balls and he brought up three figures with his 17th four of the innings.  2:24pm - Ben Slater passes 50 with a four off James Harris. The Derbyshire opener has scrapped his way to his half-century, taking 128 balls. His efforts continue to frustrate Middlesex, who would have hoped for more than one wicket by now after electing to field this morning.

1:44pm -  The afternoon sessions are under way in Derby and Colchester.

1:25pm -  A big wicket for Warwickshire, as Trescothick is removed four runs short of a fifty. Jeetan Patel has the former England opener taken at slip with his third delivery of the day.

1:15pm - Chris Jones is caught in the gully off Tom Milnes, reducing Somerset to 52 for two.

1pm - We have reached lunch in the 11am starts, though play continues at Edgbaston where Somerset are 52 for one. Here’s a summary of the state of play:

Division One

Derbyshire are  91 for one at lunch, after being asked to bat by Middlesex .

Division Two

Northamptonshire are 147 for one after choosing to bat against Essex .

12:43pm - Sales completes a fifty to move Northamptonshire to 137 for one. He raced to 39 from as many balls, but the final 11 runs needed another 24 deliveries.

12:29pm -  Derbyshire have upped the scoring rate somewhat, scoring 22 off the last two overs. Slater is unbeaten on 30, while Wayne Madsen has reached 21 off 17 deliveries.

12:18pm -  It's a good start for Warwickshire as Compton falls for six in the fifth over, trapped lbw by Keith Barker. Somerset are 23 for one.

12:11pm -  Peters sends Panesar to the extra-cover boundary to complete a half-century and take his side past the 100-mark. Sales might not be too far behind him, having raced to a run-a-ball 39.

12:08pm -  Gareth Berg makes the breakthrough for Middlesex. Hughes is the man out, holing out to Toby Roland-Jones at mid-on for 16.

12pm - Play has started at Edgbaston, with Marcus Trescothick and Nick Compton at the crease.

Monty Panesar's first over for Essex costs three runs.

11:56am -  Derbyshire and Northants are taking different approaches this morning. The former have reached 33 without loss at the end of the 13th, while the latter have just hit their 12th boundary of the innings and are 72 for one from 14 overs.

11:41am -  In the third game of the day, Somerset win the toss and choose to bat first .

11:30am - Northamptonshire have, in fact, slowed their scoring down. David Masters records the first maiden of the innings at the seventh attempt.

Derbyshire are 16 without loss after eight overs at Derby.

11:18am -  Another 10 runs followed in the next over, but Middlebrook is bowled by Masters in the fifth. Will that slow down the Northamptonshire charge? It appears not. David Sales sends the first ball he faces to the boundary for four more. They are 31 for four.

11:11am -  Northamptonshire are looking to get a move on with things this morning. David Masters' second over of the day costs 13 runs, following three boundaries and a single.

11am -  We are under way in the first two games of the day. Ben Slater and Chesney Hughes are opening for Derbyshire while Stephen Peters and James Middlebrook are out in the middle for Northamptonshire. Play starts at Edgbaston in an hour.

10:52am -  Elsewhere today, England Women are playing Australia Women in the first Ashes ODI, which can be streamed live here , England Lions begin their series against Bangladesh A and Lancashire Lightning host Hampshire Royals in the Yorkshire Bank 40. Reports from these games will be available on ecb.co.uk this evening.

10:45am - Derbyshire will bat first after Middlesex won the toss and elected to field.

Northamptonshire choose to bat at Castle Park , against an Essex side who include new signings  Gautam Gambhir and Monty Panesar .

10:37am -  Middlesex are 14 points off the top of the table and will see a win away at bottom-side Derbyshire as vital if they are to lift the trophy.

Reigning champions Warwickshire still retain hopes of keeping their crown, and face a Somerset scrapping to avoid the drop into Division Two.

Both Essex and Northamptonshire are looking to go the other way. Northamptonshire are currently in second, 29 points ahead of their opponents but having played a game more. Essex know a defeat could all-but end their chances of promotion.

10:30am -  Hello and welcome to the return of the LV= County Championship. The teams have had a break from the four-day format, with Friends Life t20 and the Yorkshire Bank 40 taking over, but today sees the start of a busy week of action.

We have three games starting today. They are:

Division One

Warwickshire v Somerset, Edgbaston. 12pm

Division Two
