Adam Lyth scored his first century of the season as in-form Yorkshire moved into a strong position against Somerset in the LV= County Championship match at Taunton.
Lyth shared in respective partnerships of 80 and 103 with Phil Jaques and Andrew Gale as the visitors reached 341 for five on a second day shortened by an over due to bad light and rain.
The entire first day had already been lost to inclement weather, but Yorkshire were able to make hay today after winning the toss - thanks largely to Lyth’s 105.
Steve Kirby, playing against his former county, made an early breakthrough when Joe Sayers edged a lifter to Marcus Trescothick at second slip in the seamer’s first over.
Lyth was soon into his stride thereafter, driving impressively in the company of Jaques before reaching 50 with a single to mid-on off Peter Trego.
With the total on 82, Jaques fell victim to a fine catch off Gemaal Hussain as stand-in wicketkeeper Alex Barrow sprung to his left to hold on to a diving chance in front of first slip.
New batsman Gale immediately looked settled, however, and Yorkshire were able to further strengthen their hand as the afternoon wore on.
Lyth moved to three figures by driving left-arm spinner George Dockrell to the cover boundary.
Soon after, the left-hander made a mess of an attempted pull off Hussain and was caught by a tumbling Trego at mid-on, having struck 15 fours in his 158-ball innings.
Another substantial partnership prevented Somerset from building on Lyth’s exit, Gale and Gary Ballance adding 80 before the latter was caught behind looking to cut Dockrell.
Gale then played on to Trego for a patient 75, but Yorkshire ended the day strongly as Adil Rashid and Andrew Hodd put on an unbroken 61.
Rashid had 47 to his name at stumps, while wicketkeeper Hodd was unbeaten on 24.
