Ben Wheeler decimated Somerset’s top order with sensational figures of 11-6-18-5 before Tom Latham and Mitchell Santner hit fifties to put a New Zealand XI in control midway through the tour match at Taunton.

Wheeler, a 23-year-old uncapped left-arm seamer, took four of Somerset’s first five wickets, leaving the hosts in trouble at 54 for five in reply to 237 all out.

Just before lunch, when he had 7-5-6-4 to his name, Wheeler was bowling to an astonishing seven slips.

Stand-in captain Peter Trego led an afternoon recovery, adding 54 alongside Alex Barow, en route to a personal 40.

Although Wheeler bowled Josh Davey for his fifth scalp, the tail wagged enough to keep the Black Caps’ first-innings lead to 33.

Tim Groenewald cheaply ousted Hamish Rutherford and nightwatchman Neil Wagner at either end of the tourists’ 35.5 second-innings overs today, but between times Latham and Santner shared 124 for the second wicket.

Latham, eventually trapped in front by Jim Allenby, batted patiently for his 57, while the number three scored more smoothly to be unbeaten on 70 in a stumps total of 149 for three, a lead of 182.

At the start of the day the New Zealanders topped up their overnight 202 for seven to 237 all out with BJ Watling moving from 52 to 65 before becoming part of Groenewald's 4-17.
