BJ Watling scored an unbeaten half-century as a New Zealand XI stuttered their way to 202 for seven on day one of their opening tour match against Somerset at Taunton.

Somerset have lost all three of their LV= County Championship matches this season but three wickets from Tim Groenewald and two apiece from debutant Josh Davey and Jim Allenby saw the hosts edge a rain-affected first day.

It might have been even better for Somerset after they won the toss and reduced the tourists to 133 for six, but Test wicketkeeper Watling struck nine fours in an unbeaten 52 to help the New Zealanders past the 200-mark before light forced the teams off.

BJ Watling advances towards the tourists' top score of 52 not out versus Somerset, who are winless in the LV= County Championship

Opener Hamish Rutherford scored a quickfire 37 until becoming the second of two victims for Scotland all-rounder Davey – who was one of the leading wicket-takers at this winter’s World Cup with 15 scalps – on his first-class debut.

Ross Taylor (32), Mitchell Santner (27) and Doug Bracewell (20) also made starts, but it was only Watling who could push on to a fifty for a Black Caps side missing several of their first-choice line-up for the four-day match.

New Zealand take on England in the first of two Investec Tests, at Lord's, starting on Thursday 21 May.
