Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will be available to play LV= County Championship cricket for defending champions Yorkshire this season.

Signed predominantly for the NatWest T20 Blast, Maxwell will now fill in for compatriot Aaron Finch in the Championship while his fellow World Cup-winner Aaron Finch recovers from a hamstring injury.

The 26-year-old will arrive at Headingley following his time with Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, whose last match of the tournament is expected to be a week on Saturday, and take over overseas duties from India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara.

Maxwell, who has played three Tests in 31 first-class matches, was due to fill his time in between Blast fixtures by featuring in second XI red-ball cricket.

The last of Glenn Maxwell's three Tests to date came in Abu Dhabi last year when Australia lost heavily to Pakistan

But White Rose director of cricket Martyn Moxon has confirmed he will act as a replacement for Finch, who is set to occupy the sidelines for two months.

Moxon said: “It looks as though Glenn’s team aren’t going to qualify for the latter stages of the IPL.

“He will come as soon as that stint has finished but we are just waiting until that’s been absolutely confirmed.

“With the talent he’s got, it’s just a matter of him needing to play. He’s got too much talent for him not to play well in red-ball cricket.”
