Devon claimed their second successive four-wicket win to begin their Unicorns Knockout Trophy defence after seeing off Dorset in Bournemouth.

Matthew Thompson’s half-century laid the platform for a successful pursuit of 196 for seven after rain reduced the match to 46 overs a side.

Ben Green and Tom Allin completed the chase with some heavy hitting to get Devon home with 12 balls to spare and leave them top of Group 1 after the weather denied closest rivals Cornwall from getting a result at home to Wiltshire.

Devon won their opener against Wales Minor Counties by four wicket.

Oxfordshire, beaten finalists last summer, have also won their opening two games following an eight-wicket success against Group 4 rivals Buckinghamshire at Wormsley.

Karl Penhale’s 4-28 restricted Buckinghamshire to 152 for eight, which was not enough as half-centuries from Hugo Darby and Lloyd Sabin enabled Oxfordshire to reach a rain-adjusted total with 10 balls in hand.

Berkshire beat last year’s Championship title winners Staffordshire by six wickets in a high-scoring contest at Stone to boost their quarter-finals hopes.

Staffordshire openers Kadeer Ali and Alex Mellor combined in a century stand before Michael Hill plundered an unbeaten 75 from 62 balls as the hosts reached 259 for five from their 38 overs.

Berkshire reeled in the target, however, with five balls to spare as they got contributions right down the order before skipper James Morris and Stewart Davison got them home with an unbroken 76-run stand from 6.4 overs.

”We’ve got to win both our games to go through I’d have thought but it’s in our hands,” Staffordshire captain Kadeer said after the game.

Hertfordshire have the best record in the competition after they recorded a 35-run Duckworth-Lewis Method win over Cambridgeshire to make it three wins from three in Group 2.

Cambridgeshire were on target in their run chase at 101 for one before Syed Kazmi’s 4-42 left them short when the rain arrived.

England Under-19s wicketkeeper Joe Clarke hit a century but fell just short of steering Shropshire home

Former Northamptonshire batsman Kyle Coetzer led Suffolk to a 50-run Duckworth-Lewis Method success over Bedfordshire at Dunstable.

Coetzer, who hit a century for Scotland against Bangladesh at the recent World Cup, struck an unbeaten 64 at the top of the order as Suffolk reached 126 for three from 24 overs.

Bedfordshire lost regular wickets in reply, with Jack Beaumont taking 3-21, to fall well short of a rain-adjusted total.

Northumberland top Group 3 following a thrilling six-run win over Shropshire at Oswestry.

Jacques du Toit smashed an unbeaten 54-ball century, but the former Leicestershire right-hander was almost outdone by Joe Clarke who responded with 107.

The England Under-19s wicketkeeper looked to be steering his side home only to fall with six needed from four balls, caught by Callum Harding off Dean Budge.

Last man Dan Bowen was then unable to score off Budge’s last three balls.

There was no play possible in Cumberland’s home clash with Cheshire, who reached the semi-finals last season, at Kendal.
