5.33pm - Well, well, well. Maybe Kent's 193 was not a bad score after all. Essex are three down with just 34 runs on the board after Darren Stevens, a half-centurion with the bat, traps Daniel Lawrence lbw with his first delivery.

5.08pm - Yorkshire end another excellent partnership at Trent Bridge, although it is not centurion Alex Hales who goes. Riki Wessels edges Will Rhodes to Jack Leaning in the slips to depart for 18. Notts are 324 for five after the fifth-wicket stand of 72.

5.05pm - Matt Coles makes an early breakthrough on his second Kent debut, locating the edge of Tom Westley's bat, before Ivan Thomas bowls Nick Browne. Essex, replying to 193, are in trouble on 18 for two.

Kumar Sangakkara is 11 runs short of a century on his Surrey debut.

4.41pm -  With all eyes on his senior batting partner, Steven Davies advances serenely through to a half-century of his own as Surrey move themselves into a strong position.

Big wicket at Derby as Mark Footitt gets Petersen for an excellent 115, his 200th first-class wicket, but Lancashire are still struggling a little on 206 for six.

The last couple of wickets are proving to be a frustration for Worcestershire. Ajmal Shahzad and Tymal Mills added 31 for the ninth, but the latter falls to Gareth Andrew.

4.23pm -  It's all over for Kent and they won't be happy with managing just 193 in their first innings, James Porter grabbing the final wicket.

4.13pm -  It's been some turnaround for Worcestershire since lunch. Sachithra Senanayake has his first two wickets for the Pears, dismissing Ashar Zaidi and Steve Magoffin in quick succession.

Hales acknowledges the dressing room as he brings up his 150  with a clip for four.

4.04pm -  There's a cruel blow to Lancashire just before the tea break as Smith is cleaned up by Alex Hughes following a partnership of 135 for the fifth wicket.

3.55pm - Rankin is on fire! His figures read 4-38 in his 11th over after Sean Ervine departs for a duck. Hampshire are 194 for six.

Notts reach the interval at 281 for four, Hales unbeaten on 141, while Sangakkara has 52 of Surrey's 227 for three, seven runs more than Steven Davies has to his name.

3.45pm - Sangakkara is making it look easy at the SWALEC! The classy left-hander marks his Surrey bow with a 83-ball half-century, taking his side to 223 for three.

Hampshire are in a spot of bother now at 178 for five at Edgbaston, Rankin bowling Will Smith.

No sooner after Stevens reaches 50, he becomes a fifth victim for Ryder. Essex reaping the rewards of winning the toss!

Sussex collect a third batting bonus point before taking tea on 300 for six.

3.33pm - Jack Brooks strikes twice in an over to check Nottinghamshire's progress. After trapping Taylor lbw to end a 171-run stand with Hales, the paceman has Samit Patel caught in the cordon third ball.

Worcestershire have a sixth wicket as Luke Wright pulls Alex Gidman to Sachithra Senanayake.

Kent are eight down after Ryder nets a fourth scalp, removing Mitchell Claydon for seven.

3.27pm - Milestones! Petersen takes advantage of his reprieve to move to a century on his Lancashire Championship debut.

Wright also raises his bat, reaching fifty for Sussex.

3.20pm -  Both of Kent's returning players have failed with the bat today. Ex-Middlesex man Joe Denly made only three and now Matt Coles, formerly of Hampshire, departs for eight. A second victim for Smith leaves the score at 142 for seven.

Nottinghamshire batsman Taylor reaches a fifty at Trent Bridge while Lancashire duo Alviro Petersen, handed a life on 90, and Tom Smith take their stand into three figures.

3.14pm -  Worcestershire seem to be dragging things back at Hove. Ben Brown, a centurion in Sussex's first match, is caught off Gareth Andrew, leaving the hosts 270 for five. Luke Wright is unbeaten on 37.

2.54pm - Shortly after Notts collect their first batting bonus point, Hales moves to a century, off 131 balls. Click this link to watch the action at Trent Bridge.

Warwickshire seamer Boyd Rankin, who shrugged off a back niggle to play today, has a second wicket when fellow England Lion James Vince is dismissed lbw for eight.

2.46pm - Kent's revival is checked when Sam Billings succumbs to Greg Smith, in his second over. The visitors to the Essex County Ground are 125 for six.

2.42pm - Machan is gone for 135 off 100 balls, caught in the deep. The expensive Shantry finally has his man and Sussex are 231 for four.

On-loan Glamorgan all-rounder Craig Meschede ends Pietersen's brief stay at the crease. The right-hander, on 19, edges to slip.

Hales, 16 runs short of a century, and Taylor share a 100-run stand in Nottingham. The hosts are 177 for two, making the Yorkshire bowlers toil.

2.30pm -  Sangakkara and Pietersen are enjoying themselves at the SWALEC, putting on 33 in seven overs, while Hales is moving through the gears at Trent Bridge.

Kent and Lancashire are rebuilding nicely at the Essex County Ground and 3aaa County Ground respectively.

2.08pm -  Another wicket at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. No, it's not Machan! Craig Cachopa becomes Charlie Morris' second victim for just eight.

Hampshire skipper Jimmy Adams raises his bat for fifty at Edgbaston.

2.05pm - Hales moves to a half-century against Yorkshire.

Kevin Pietersen accompanies Kumar Sangakkara at the crease in Cardiff after Zafar Ansari departs for 48, on-loan Nottinghamshire seamer Andy Carter claiming his wicket.

2pm - Century for Machan! Amazing. The Scotland international, flicking Shantry over midwicket for six, completes the milestone in just 70 deliveries at Hove. I wonder what Michael Yardy is thinking? He was only included in the side due to the former England all-rounder's illness.

Jesse Ryder is showing the form he ended 2014 in. The New Zealander takes his third wicket, cleaning up Fabian Cowdrey for 18, to leave Kent 87 for five. A good toss to win for Essex!

Yorkshire's pace attack is frustrated by a half-century stand between England limited-overs internationals Alex Hales and James Taylor at Trent Bridge, the pair taking the score to 127 for two.

1.55pm - Worcestershire finally end Ed Joyce and Matt Machan's 145-run partnership, in-form left-arm seamer Jack Shantry dismissing the former one short of a half-century. Sussex are 161 for two in just the 34th over.

Warwickshire also find a welcome breakthrough at Edgbaston. Liam Dawson departs for 38 to Chris Wright, reducing Hampshire to 94 for one.

1.05pm - That makes lunch in all six of today’s fixtures. Here is the state of play currently:

Division One

Debutant Matthew Fisher, 17, took a wicket after becoming the sixth-youngest player to appear for Yorkshire . After an even morning, Nottinghamshire went into lunch on 105 for two.

Matt Machan produced a stunning display of hitting, notching a 27-ball half-century before taking his score to 87 as Sussex recovered from an early setback to reach 153 for one versus  Worcestershire .

Hampshire made a solid start to their second game of the season, with openers Jimmy Adams and Liam Dawson batting through the first session without trouble to reach 89 for nought at the break against Warwickshire .

Division Two

Ashley Giles’ tenure as Lancashire  head coach and cricket director endured a tough start as they were reduced to 61 for four at lunch. Tony Palladino was the most impressive of the Derbyshire attack, taking two wickets to put the visitors on the back foot at the 3aaa County Ground.

Kent slipped to 74 for four after Essex won the toss and elected to field. Jesse Ryder took two wickets with Daniel Bell-Drummond the crucial man to fall just before the break.

Kumar Sangakkara faced four balls before lunch on his Surrey debut after Zafar Ansari and Rory Burns' century opening stand was ended when the latter was caught behind for 50. The visitors, who also fielded Kevin Pietersen, were   104 for one  at lunch versus  Glamorgan at the SWALEC Stadium.

12.59pm -  Burns falls just after reaching 50. That means Kumar Sangakkara will be on his way to the crease.

12.48pm -  Not long to go before lunch but it's another blow in Ashley Giles' first game in charge of Lancashire. Steven Croft is the fourth wicket to fall, with Tony Palladino getting his second of the day, and Daniel Bell-Drummond has departed for 30 as Kent fall to 72 for four.

12.40pm -  There's another landmark wicket, this time at the 3aaa County Ground as Shiv Thakor gets his first in Derbyshire colours. It's a big one too, with Prince falling for a patient 21.

12.21pm -  Machan brings up a blistering half-century with another six, and it's taken him just 27 deliveries to reach the milestone. He's only playing because of an illness to Michael Yardy, but he's certainly taken his chance.

Yorkshire's Matthew Fisher has just completed his first over in first-class cricket. Brendan Taylor or Alex Hales wouldn't be a bad first wicket for the youngster.

12.09pm -  Three down for Kent. Sam Northeast edges to slip to become Ryder's second scalp of the day. Surrey on the other hand are progressing nicely, with Rory Burns and Zafar Ansari taking their opportunity to impress ahead of their more illustrious colleagues.

11.54am -  Rob Key becomes Jesse Ryder's first victim of the summer at the Essex County Ground, while the South African duo of Ashwell Prince and Alviro Petersen, on debut, are rebuilding for Lancashire.

Meanwhile, Machan moves on to 36 from 17 with a big six.

11.42am -  Steven Mullaney looked in good touch for Notts but he's been trapped in front by Steven Patterson, who has made an excellent start to the season for Yorkshire.

Matt Machan is off to a flier on the south coast, hitting six boundaries in his first 12 deliveries.

11.26am -  Sussex may be ruing the decision to bat first after losing Luke Wells to Charlie Morris for just nine at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground.

11.14am -  Joe Denly's Kent comeback doesn't lasted long. The former Middlesex man falls to Jamie Porter for just three, while Paul Horton is also on his way as Derbyshire and Essex make strong starts.

11am -  We're off! Seven teams are getting their campaigns under way today, while Yorkshire and Sussex will be looking to build on winning starts made in the first round.
