Left-arm paceman Tymal Mills insists he has put any thoughts of an England call-up to the back of his mind and is simply concentrating on performing for his new county at the start of the 2015 season.
The 22-year-old swapped Essex for Sussex in the off-season and enjoyed a winning start as Ed Joyce's side beat newly-promoted Hampshire by 92 runs in their LV= County Championship Division One opener.
Mills finished with match figures of 3-65 from his 20 overs to make him Sussex's most economical bowler.
Overall, Mills will look to put his injury problems behind him – he ended last season on the physiotherapist’s table – but a rare winter where he has not been included in England Performance Programmes has allowed him to focus on getting his body right.
Any designs on an England spot are taking a back-seat, as he told the latest ECB podcast: "People are obviously speaking about me and it’s nice to hear, but it’s not something I’m getting overly caught up in.
"I need to make sure I don’t get too far ahead of myself.
"I need to probably distance myself a little bit and probably just focus on the first month of the season initially, and when the white-ball cricket starts in May make an impact in that.
"Because that’s where I feel I can really do so, so these first six weeks, that’s all I’m really thinking about."
The philosophy could yet yield rewards, though with England selector Angus Fraser keeping the pool as wide as possible, it will be hard work for Mills.
"There’s good, young cricketers in Division Two," Fraser added.
"Having spent three of the seasons that I’ve been at Middlesex in Division Two, we had Strauss, Finn, Robson’s obviously developed there, Eoin Morgan, so there are sides with good players in Division Two.
"We look at that as an England selector and take scoring runs and taking wickets as important as in the first division."
