Johann Myburgh and James Hildreth both struck centuries, the former’s unbeaten, as Somerset made quick progress in between the showers against Durham MCCU at Taunton on a day when rain caused havoc around the country.
The pair added 172 in 31.3 overs for the third wicket, Hildreth falling for 102 three balls before the close on day two, in which only 40 overs were possible, with Myburgh unbeaten with 115 of the hosts’ 264 for three.
While Myburgh was making his first appearance of the season, Hildreth continued the fine form that saw him compile 89 and 49 for Marylebone Cricket Club against Yorkshire in the Champion County match in Abu Dhabi last month.
Resuming today on 49 for one, the hosts lost skipper Marcus Trescothick for 27, a second victim for Jack Wood, with the score on 90.

The SWALEC Stadium was the only ground to see a full day of action, with Glamorgan taking their score to 316 for four courtesy of half-centuries from Will Bragg, Ben Wright and Chris Cooke.
Bragg and Wright contributed 71 and 63 respectively, sharing a second-wicket stand of 109 after James Kettleborough, a winter signing from Northamptonshire, and Jacques Rudolph frustrated Cardiff MCCU, who won the toss this morning after day one was washed out, with a 76-run opening partnership.
Cooke then progressed to 66 after Bragg and Wright were dismissed to leave his side well placed.

Gareth Berg claimed his maiden Hampshire first-class wicket during the 25 overs of play possible at the Ageas Bowl.
Boosted by centuries from Michael Carberry and James Vince yesterday, Hampshire called time on their first innings on 474 for four overnight.
Chris Wood and Sean Ervine both snared a scalp each before former Middlesex seam-bowling all-rounder Berg had Hasan Azad caught behind, limiting Loughborough MCCU to 88 for three at the close.
The wet weather prevented Sussex, Worcestershire and Northamptonshire from taking to the field at BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground, The Parks and Fenner’s respectively.
@jomybs Congrats on your first century for @SomersetCCC today and to @dreth25 for his 31st. Quality batting #wearesomerset#FTDT
