Bears take firm grip with Evans ton

Warwickshire continued to get their season back on track by keeping Nottinghamshire in the field for five sessions in their LV= County Championship clash at Edgbaston.

A career-best 178 from Laurie Evans, coupled with a seventh-wicket partnership of 199 with 21-year-old Ateeq Javid, took the Division One title-holders to a total of 463 all out.

Nottinghamshire then made the worst possible start when Steven Mullaney was lbw to Chris Woakes' first ball but there was a major let-off as Jeetan Patel missed Michael Lumb at third slip in the next over from Keith Barker.

The in-form left-hander went on to make an unbeaten 50, putting on an unbroken 84 with James Taylor – himself 54 not out - before the visitors closed 332 behind at 131 for two.

Taylor came in when Mullaney’s opening partner Alex Hales was lbw to off-spinner Patel for 17.

The turnaround in Warwickshire's summer could not have been more dramatic. At the start of last week they were holding a relegation spot in the championship and looking at three straight defeats in a faltering start to their Friends Life t20 campaign.

Now they are challenging for a second successive championship win, having thumped Middlesex at Uxbridge, and are back in contention in the shortest format after beating Worcestershire and Gloucestershire.

The key to their resurgence in the four-day game is a return of the hard-nosed cricket that made them champions last September.

Batting first each time, they ground down Middlesex for 150 overs and went on slightly longer in testing Nottinghamshire's patience.

With Andre Adams feeling unwell, they were a bowler down after lunch as Evans scored at a run-a-ball once he had cleared a major hurdle in reaching a maiden championship hundred from 260 deliveries.

Now 25, the former Surrey batsman, who made his only other first-class century in 2007 when at Durham University, has been given the opportunity to finally nail down a first-team spot this season.

A little uncertain early in his innings, he finished a seven-hour marathon with a barrage of strokes.

When he was bowled by the persevering Samit Patel, who earned figures of 3-123 for his troubles, Evans had hit 22 fours and three sixes, two of these coming in a solitary over from David Hussey.

Equally encouraging for Warwickshire is the development of Javid, who followed up an innings of 85 against Surrey last month by making 83 from 240 balls in only his second championship appearance at Edgbaston.

When he was caught behind, driving at Ajmal Shahzad, Nottinghamshire were able to escape from the sweltering heat with Luke Fletcher taking the last two wickets in eight balls, although not before Barker had contributed 23.
