Yorkshire convincingly won the Champion County game inside three days, beating Marylebone Cricket Club by nine wickets at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
The White Rose today dismissed their opponents for 220, one less than MCC managed in the first innings, before knocking off the 70 runs they required in 20 overs.
Leg-spinner Adil Rashid, part of the England squad to tour the West Indies, was Yorkshire’s most potent bowler, returning 4-72 in 22.5 overs. Jack Brooks, a fellow England Lion this winter, was most miserly though with outstanding figures of 3-22 from 13 overs.
The 2014 LV= County Champions pursued their target steadily, albeit losing Alex Lees cheaply. But first-innings centurion Adam Lyth, another member of England’s tour party, ensured a straightforward chase with 46 not out.
Captain Nick Compton top-scored for MCC with 74 from the top of the order while James Hildreth’s 49 was their only other score of note.
Yorkshire yesterday took a first-innings lead of 151 thanks chiefly to Lyth’s measured 113.
MCC today resumed on 13 for none but soon lost Alastair Cook for his second low score of the match. Brooks had the England Test skipper caught at midwicket for five, rewarding miserly bowling from him and Ryan Sidebottom.
Compton and Michael Carberry responded with a stand of 50, featuring three consecutive fours off Steven Patterson and Tim Bresnan, until Carberry edged to slip on 23 in off-spinner Lyth’s first over.
Compton raised his fifty before lunch and shared a decent partnership with Hildreth, a Somerset team-mate until Compton rejoined Middlesex in December.
The stand was worth 45 when Will Rhodes had Compton caught behind for his third scalp on debut.
Rashid soon trapped Daryl Mitchell in front, only for Hildreth to react with a flurry of fours. Yet Hildreth continued to lose partners, Zafar Ansari playing on to Brooks.
Sam Billings announced himself with three fours in four Patterson balls, but in the next over Rashid snared Hildreth leg-before and shortly after Patterson likewise ousted Chris Rushworth.
That left MCC 210 for seven at tea, after which the innings quickly ended with Billings caught behind off Brooks and Rashid removing Matt Dunn and Graham Onions in back-to-back balls, Onions batting with a runner.
Lees and Lyth launched the reply steadily and made victory all-but certain by the time Adam Riley had the former caught behind for eight in the 16th over.
Jack Leaning, with 13 from 14 deliveries, then accompanied Lyth, who ended proceedings with two consecutive fours off Riley.
