Head Coach Peter Moores admits England’s performances in the World Cup have “let people down.”
Eoin Morgan’s side exited the showpiece after losing to Bangladesh at the Adelaide Oval today, their fourth defeat in five Pool A matches.
“You just feel hollow if I am being honest, I’m very, very disappointed. We haven’t played well enough, we have just got to accept that,” Moores told Sky Sports.
“You just don’t know what to say or what to feel really. You just feel like you have let people down I suppose – that is the main emotion.”
Knowing a win was required to keep their quarter-final hopes alive, England slipped to a dramatic 15-run loss to the Tigers, who progress to the last eight with co-hosts Australia and New Zealand plus Sri Lanka.
James Anderson gave England, who won the toss, a fine start by reducing Bangladesh to eight for two in the third over.
However, Mahmudullah struck his country’s first World Cup century and was assisted by Mushfiqur Rahim’s 89 as the Tigers posted 275 for seven.
Ian Bell and Jos Buttler hit half-centuries but Rubel Hossain took four wickets to help dismiss England for 260, leaving Chris Woakes stranded on 42.
Moores added: “We worked really hard to get better with the ball, to get our lengths up at the start and attack the batsmen and bowl more Test-match lengths.
“If it wasn’t full, attack them with the short ball, if that was needed at different times.
“I thought 275 was chaseable. I don’t think we bowled as well as we could have done in the middle, but we started well and we finished well. 275 after a decent start, we should have chased that down but we didn’t.”
