Ramprakash: England approach will pay off

England Batting Coach Mark Ramprakash is happy with the aggressive intent shown by the top order and feels it will soon produce results.

After easily chasing a low West Indies total in their first warm-up game for the World Cup, England made 250 for eight in defeat to Pakistan and then 231 as they lost their tournament opener to Australia in Pool A .

On both occasions they had to rebuild after the loss of an early wicket but Ramprakash believes an attacking start is vital in order to compete with the top one-day teams in the world, starting with New Zealand at the Wellington Regional Stadium tomorrow.

"It's a delicate balance to play with freedom and also responsibility," he said. "In the cauldron of the international arena, to get that balance right doesn't always happen.

"You can't have it both ways, we got criticised greatly in 2014 for not being pro-active enough in the first 10 overs and so now, it's a bit ironic to hear 'have we got to calm down?'.

"As a coach you've got to be a bit careful with the language you use to players. Ultimately, they've got to work it out and they will get judged on their performances.

"If I was to err upon one side, it would be that we want the players to go out and play with an aggressive mindset and that freedom. The best sides do that. But it's up to the top-three guys to assess the conditions and play accordingly."

Captain Eoin Morgan has found runs hard to come by since his century in the Tri-Series opener against Australia last month, but Ramprakash revealed has been impressed with his leadership of the group.

"I've been hugely impressed with the way Eoin's dealt with taking over the group and with the way he manages to differentiate the captaincy and the leadership role from his own game," he said.

"It was hugely encouraging to see him get what I thought was a wonderful knock at the SCG, that hundred there was a real testament to his character.

"He wasn't at his fluent best, it was a tough start and the team was in trouble, and he showed all the resilience that we've come to expect from him and some good strokeplay.

"And then he's had this amazing run where he's found different ways to get out. If it was another person, another character, I might have real cause for concern because I think it would weigh heavily on their mind.

"He wants more runs and it's important for the team that he plays his part but, in terms of handling the tournament and the pressures of it, you couldn't really ask for a better character to be able to handle that.

"He's still the same guy, you wouldn't know whether he's got the hundred or not, as to how he's going about his business."

New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum also has no doubts his opposite number will come good.

"Morgs is a champion player, he's probably one of my better mates in cricket," he said.

"Tough times don't last but tough blokes do, so hopefully soon he'll come out of it. Hopefully tomorrow we're able to keep him quiet but I'm very confident at some point he will bounce out of it because he's a quality player and he's a tough bloke too."

The Black Caps opened their campaign with comfortable wins over Sri Lanka and Scotland, the latter a low-scoring game which was in contrast to the impressive form of their batting line-up leading into the tournament.

McCullum expects a tougher test against England but backed his side to cope.

"I think they're a very good bowling attack, they're going to pose a different challenge to what we've faced in the last while," he said.

"But it's a challenge the boys are looking forward to, the wicket at Wellington usually has a few runs in it too so hopefully we can perform with a similar blueprint to the last 12 to 18 months. If we can do that we'll give ourselves a good chance."
