Steven Smith will captain Australia against England on Friday, a game David Warner misses with a hamstring injury.

With regular skipper Michael Clarke out injured, Smith took over the Test reins against India and excelled with the bat, scoring centuries in each of the three games he was in charge for.

George Bailey was retained as Clarke's one-day stand-in for the Tri-Series but he has been suspended for the game in Hobart for Australia's slow over-rates.

That means Smith will get his hands on the 50-over side when they take on England at Hobart, but the loss of Warner represents a blow.

Steven Smith, right, has been named captain for Friday's game against England but David Warner, left, misses out through injury

He hit a fine century in the series-opener against England in Sydney but is not fit to take a second shot at the old enemy.

Cameron White and Shaun Marsh have been added to the squad as batting cover for Warner and Bailey.

A Cricket Australia statement read: "Steven Smith has been named captain of Australia's one-day team for Friday's Carlton Mid ODI Tri-Series with George Bailey suspended after a second slow-over rate offence in Sunday's match in Melbourne.

"Shaun Marsh and Cameron White have both been called up for the fourth match in the Tri-series, with David Warner not travelling with the squad to Hobart to recuperate after picking up a slight hamstring strain earlier in the series."
